What is AS9100D?

AS9100D is a quality management system (QMS) standard built specifically for organizations working in aerospace, space, and defense.

It’s not a product spec or a technical checklist. It’s the operating system behind how a company ensures quality — from leadership decisions all the way down to production, purchasing, and inspection.

In plain terms:

AS9100D tells you how to run your company so that what you deliver is safe, traceable, consistent, and ready for flight.

It’s based on ISO 9001, the globally recognized QMS standard, but AS9100D layers in additional requirements that matter — things like risk analysis, supplier control, and product safety.

Why AS9100D Exists

Aircraft parts don’t get second chances. The industry needed a way to standardize how quality is managed — not just from one company to the next, but across countries, languages, and suppliers.

So the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG) — made up of aerospace leaders like Boeing, Airbus, and Lockheed Martin — developed AS9100D to:

  • Align suppliers under one consistent standard

  • Reduce redundant audits

  • Improve traceability and reliability

  • Prevent issues before they happen

Who Needs AS9100D?

AS9100D is designed for organizations that design, develop, or provide products and services to the aviation, space, and defense sectors.

You may need AS9100D if:

  • Companies that produce aerospace parts, subassemblies, or final systems—whether mechanical, electrical, or software-driven. Certification is often required to supply OEMs or Tier 1 contractors.

  • Organizations involved in designing aircraft systems, aerospace software, or spaceflight components must demonstrate system-level quality practices, including risk analysis and design validation.

  • Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) organizations servicing aircraft and defense systems benefit from AS9100D when working with certified parts or military customers.

  • Even if you're not making parts, if you supply raw materials, electronics, or hardware to aerospace customers, AS9100D may be required to ensure full traceability and counterfeit part prevention.

  • New or growing companies looking to bid on aerospace contracts often pursue AS9100D to meet requirements from larger primes and government agencies.
